字嘉手納拝所の大ガジュマルは嘉手納町に残る数少ない大木である。ガジュマルの周囲を所有者が買い取り、その一角に字の拝所が設けられ、ブロック塀で囲み保護している。昭和51年に嘉手納町の天然記念物に指定され、保護されている。
説明版には、この付近はかつてリュウキュウマツや雑木が生い茂る山で、この大ガジュマルは1890年代から現在の大きさだったと伝えられているとある。また、この一帯は琉球国旧記に記載されているナカムイという御嶽で、現在の祠は戦後建てられたものと言われている。
The great gajumaru at Aza Kadena Ugan is one of few large trees remaining in Kadena Town. The owner bought the land around the tree, setting up an ugan, a place of worship, and surrounding it with a concrete moat for protection. This tree was designated a natural monument of Kadena in 1976, and has been looked after since then.
According to the explanation board, this great gajumaru was the same size as it is now in the 1890s, growing in this former mountain area where Ryukyu island pine and various kinds of trees grew luxuriantly. Also, this area’s current hokora/shrine Nakamui-utaki is recorded in “Ryukyu Kokyuki,” the Chronicle of the Ryukyus, to have been built after the war.
