念頭平松　（Nento Hiramatsu Pine Tree）

  田畑が広がる田名集落の東部タンナ岳のふもとに生育する。四方に広がった樹形は容姿端麗で、その枝ぶりの美しさは「念頭平松の枝むちの美ら･･･」と琉歌にも歌われている。
  言い伝えによると、以前この場所には兄松と呼ばれる松が約500年前に植えられていたが、今から300年ほど前にある男がその兄松を盗伐して持ち帰ってしまった。その後、程なく男は松を盗った祟りで病気になって亡くなってしまう。
  そのことを恐れた男の親類がおわびに植えたのが現在の念頭平松で、樹齢は300年余りになると言われている。
  久米島の「五枝の松」と共に沖縄の２大名松として知られる。

 

The Nento Hiramatsu grows at the bottom of Tanna Mount in the eastern part of the wide settlement of fields known as the Tana Settlement.

This tree is formed wide all around, with good looks and beautiful foliage. A traditional Okinawan poem, or ryuka, goes, “The beauty of the Nento Hiramatsu pine’s foliage…”

According to lore, a pine called Animatsu grew in this spot for about 500 years, but about 300 years ago a man illegally cut Animatsu down and took the wood home. Soon after, that man grew ill from a curse and died.

In fear, the man’s relatives planted a new tree in apology, which grew into the Nento Hiramatsu of today. It is said to have grown for some 300 years.

Nento Hiramatsu, together with Kume Island’s “Goeda no Matsu,” are known as the two great pines of Okinawa.
