仲道の三番アコウ　（ Nakadou no San-ban Akou/The Third Akou of Nakadou）

　「仲道道（なかどうみち）から七けえら通うけ･･･」と歌われる八重山の代表的叙情歌 「とぅばらーま」ゆかりの地にあり、地元では「三番アコウ」と呼ばれている。
　この三番アコウの生育する登野城区には以前まで一番アコウ、二番アコウがあったが枯死し、現在は三番アコウのみが現存している。
　これらのアコウは、昔は道しるべや行商人の憩いの場として親しまれた。現在は旧暦8月に行われるとぅばらーま大会の前夜祭が樹下で開催され、歌を刻んだ歌碑が建立されている。

 

　地域の人に守られ、葉を約20mも広げ、大きな緑陰をつくり出している。

 

There is a tree, locally known as the “Third Akou, (an akou is a type of strangler fig)” located on land closely associated with the lyrics of “Twubarama,” a representative song of Yaeyama. The lyrics go, “Nakadoumichi kara nanakeera kayouke… (However many times I take Nakadou Road…)”

Within the Tonoshiro area, there used to grow a “First Akou” and “Second Akou,” but they died, and only the “Third Akou” still remains.

These akou long ago were used as path markers and resting spots for traveling merchants. Today, on the eve of the Twubarama Festival during August of the old lunar calendar, festivities are held under the tree. A stone with the poem Twubarama carved into it has been erected.

Protected by locals, the Akou’s leaves can grow to about 20m, providing great shade.
