真中屋御嶽のアコウ　（ Mannakaya-utaki Akou）

　上地集落の南に位置する真中屋御嶽に生育しており、御嶽の周辺は宅地に囲まれている。このアコウの木は、根元部分に、500年以前の頃のものと思われる古墳を抱き抱えていることから、「古墳を抱くアコウ」と呼ばれ、市の天然記念物に指定されている。古墳を抱き鎮座する姿は力強く、見る者に悠久の歴史を感じさせるものがある。
　墓(古墳)をつくった当時の人の知恵で、墓が風雨に耐えるためアコウの木を植えたと考えられる。現在は、横の広場で地域住民がゲートボールを楽しむ姿も見られ、安らぎや憩いの場となっている。

 

Located in the southern end of the village of Uechi, and surrounded by residential land, is the akou (a type of strangler fig) of the sacred Mannakaya-utaki. This akou’s base wraps around what is thought to be an over 500-year-old tomb, and is thus called “the tomb-hugging akou.” The city has designated it a natural monument. A viewer, seeing this prominent sight clutching the old tomb, will be heartened feeling such long history.

From what we know of the people who lived when the tomb was made, it’s thought that they planted the akou to protect the tomb from bad weather. Today, the common area beside the tree has become one of peace and rest; locals enjoying gateball can be seen there.
