国道沿いに人目をひくように生育している当樹木は、「泊の大クワディサー」として地域の人々に親しまれている。伝承によると今から200年ほど前、中城間切番所に首里王府から役人が派遣され、その任期を終えて離任する際、懇意にしていた泊集落の人達との別れを惜しんで植えた樹木であると言われている。 扇状に大きく伸びた枝がつくり出す緑陰は人々に安らぎを与えている。また、現代人を琉球王朝時代に思いを引き寄せさせる当樹木は、歴史の語りべとして地域に愛される古木となっている。
なお、同名称で村の天然記念物に指定されている。
This eye-catching tree growing along the national highway is known familiarly to residents as “Tomari no Oo-kuwadisaa.” According to lore, about 200 years ago representatives sent to Nakagusuku Magiri Bansho (regional public station) from the Ryukyu Government in Shuri planted this tree in their sorrow at parting from their villager friends in Tomari when their term of duty at the village came to its end.
Large outstretched fan-shaped branches provide shade which gives people peace and comfort. This tree makes people today care about the Ryukyu Dynasty, and is loved by the community as a teller of history. Moreover, the tree is designated as the village’s natural monument under the same name.
