シランキー（名前の知らない木） シルギー、シラキー（樹皮が白い木）　（Shirankii (Tree Name Unknown) Shirugii, Shirakii (White Bark Tree)）

　有銘集落のウガン（拝所背後の神山）の傾斜地に生育し、集落の守り木、シンボルとして区民に崇められ大切にされている。
　周辺には高木が立ち並んでいるため、地元住民以外に知られたのはごく最近である。
 　オガタマノキは「招霊（おきたま）の木」が転じたともいわれ、日本では古くから神社によく植えられる。
  九州中南部から奄美・徳之島・沖縄・石垣・西表・与那国島の各島に分布する日本固有種である。
  身近な貨幣である1円玉の裏の絵柄としても使われている。

 

 

Shirankii grows on the sloping land of the local ugan, a place of worship, behind Kami-yama (a mountain where a god lives) in Arime Settlement. The tree is looked after and worshiped by the inhabitants as their symbol and protector. Only recently did people other than local residents realize this tree existed, as this area is lined with other tall trees.

Ogatama trees, a type of evergreen, are said to be reborn Okitama trees (Okitama means the invocation of the spirits of the dead). They have often been planted by shrines in Japan from long ago.

This tree is of a species endemic to Japan which is distributed from south-central Kyushu to the islands of Amami, Tokunoshima, Okinawa, Ishigaki, Iriomote, and Yonaguni.

It is used for the design of the reverse side of the one yen coin, familiar in Japan.
