当樹木は島袋集落の小高い丘に生育しており、北中城村指定の名木1号に指定され、島袋区のシンボルとなっている。
周囲は裸地であるが、大アカギの樹勢は旺盛で、幹下部はコブ状となり独特の樹幹をしていて、オオタニワタリが着生している。
This great akagi, or bishop wood, tree grows on a small hill and is designated the first tree of historical interest in Kita-Nakagusuku village, a symbol of Shimabukuro. This area is bare ground save for this great akagi, with its great vitality, its peculiar trunk formation with knots and an epiphytic fern called ohtaniwatari, or bird’s-nest fern.
