首里金城の大アカギは、古の時からそこにあり、戦禍が厳しかった中を奇跡的に難を逃れ、今もこの場所にたたずむ大木である。当樹木は鬼餅伝説など歴史的に貴重な御嶽境内にあり、昭和47年の復帰の日に国指定天然記念物に指定され、保護が図られている。金城町は、那覇市の中でも歴史的遺産が数多く残されており、周囲22haは景観形成地域として指定され、歴史的町並みの保全を図っている。様々な言い伝えのある御嶽もあり、歴史を学ぶのに適した場所である。
Great akagi, or bishop wood, at Shuri Kinjo has grown in the same spot from old times, miraculously surviving the calamity of war to remain in the same place today. This tree is inside of a historically significant place of worship, or ugan, famous for the legend of the “Demon’s Rice Cake” (Uni Muuchii/Oni Mochi). This tree was designated a national natural monument on the day of the reversion to Japan in 1972, and has been protected as such. Many pieces of heritage remain in Naha City’s Kinjo Town. Twenty-two hectares of the surrounding area are designated a natural landscape to preserve historical town scenery. This area is good for learning history as various legends remain at the ugan.
