観音寺のフクギ　（Kannon-ji Temple Garcinia）

　金武観音寺は琉球八社のひとつで、16世紀に日秀上人によって建立されたと言われる寺である。
　戦災を免れた当寺院の礼拝道に、周辺の樹木よりひときわ大きな姿を見せるこのフクギは、訪れた人が自然に背筋を正したくなるような立ち姿で、町民の愛郷心を育む先人からの遺産として親しまれている。
　昭和９年の観音堂の火災や先の大戦など度重なる災難を免れた当樹木は350年とも言われる長い年月を過ごしてきた。
　観音寺や境内にある鍾乳洞にまつわる伝承も多く、これらを語り継ぐ人達にも当樹木が観音寺の風景として思い描かれているだろう。

 

Kin Kannon-ji is said to be one of the Eight Shrines of the Ryukyu, built by Nisshu Shonin in the 16th century. This fukugi, or garcinia, tree appears noticeably larger than surrounding trees on the path to the shrine, which did not suffer damages from World War II. Its growing figure makes visitors feel like standing tall. It is known familiarly as an inheritance from ancestors that cultivates love of their hometown. This tree is believed to have lived for a long time, 350-some years, escaping repeated disasters such as World War II or the Kannon-ji fire in 1934. There is much lore related to Kannon-ji and the limestone caves in the ground of the shrine. For lore keepers, the fukugi tree appears as an image of Kannon-ji scenery.
