内間の大アカギ　（ Uchima no Oo-akagi/Great Bishop Wood in Uchima）

アカギは平安時代、朝廷への朝貢物として重宝され、位記の軸や太刀の柄、和琴の脚や櫛などに用いられていた。近代では防風樹としての役割、採種油圧搾器、精糖車台などに使用される有用材であったという。当樹木のしたに村の井戸があったため、内間の大アカギは「神木」とされ大切にされてきた。戦前の村の祭りではアカギの前で組棒を行ったという。また、戦災を免れて生き残った大樹のひとつであり、大切に保護していきたい古木である。

 

 

Akagi, or bishop wood, was formerly treasured for making tributary goods to the imperial court in the Heian Period. It was used to make the center of court rank diploma, sword hilts, the legs of Japanese zithers, combs, and more. In the late modern period, akagi was a useful material for things such as windbreakers, compressors for seeds that yield oil, and the bodies of vehicles to refine sugar. The village well used to be just under this tree, which was valued as a “god tree.” In village festivals before World War II, they demonstrated kumibo (a kind of bojutsu, the martial art of the staff weapon called bo) in front of the tree. This tree is one of those old trees which survived the ravages of World War II, and should be preserved and cared for.
